Great session in the studio with Brad
Had another great session in the studio with Brad tonight. I booked the studio from 5.00 pm to 11.00 pm and went in with as many instruments as I could carry! I took my new bass, plus my Cort 12-string guitar, a Tanglewood mandolin, a bag of flutes & whistles, etc., plus my old Bas GT-5 guitar effects processor.
I didn't really have much more of a plan than - play a bass line for "One Day Soon" - a thoughtful contemorary piece with a pick-me-up chorus - and have a look at adding some flute parts to "Lucky".
Once I had the bass down (and again I'd like to mention that the sound from my new Esp Ltd bass is nothing short of awesome!) I added a few simple electric guitar chords and some light high-register picking runs to the song and "One Day Soon" is now coming along very nicely!
I also decided to give singing some vocals for "Lucky" a go, and so I warmed my voice up and had a sing through. I was very pleased with the results and quickly had the main vocal complete. I then added some lower vocal harmonies to certain sections of the melody. Brad did a little tweaking and before long the harmonies were perfectly aligned with the main vocal.
Lastly, it was time to add some flute magic to the piece and so, at the conclusion of the first chorus, I added a simple, yet utterly magical, Jethro Tull-esqe harmonised flute melody. It really does bring the piece alive!
